The ATVET approach has been hailed as an innovative approach to improve the skills of youth, women and farmers for job creation and  agriculture productivity. The ATVET project operates at the continental level (NEPAD Agency) by mainstreaming VET education and skills development into continental polices and strategies and implemented at country levels where it commenced in Kenya, Ghana, Benin, Togo, Malawi and Burkina Fasoin the first phase from 2012 as pilot countries.

The project has received additional funding for upscaling into 6 new countries including Sierra Leone, South Africa, Namibia, Uganda, Rwanda and Tunisia. The objective of the project is to develop and implement market-oriented vocational trainings, as well as coherent concepts for the reform of the national vocational education system in the agriculture sector. CAADP ATVET helps to create more coherent policies for agricultural education and training in Africa, particularly for young people who are the most valuable asset for Africa’s future. It also fills a thematic gap in the current CAADP process and has strong potential to contribute to the achievement of the CAADP goals of agricultural sector growth, rural income generation and poverty reduction.

The projects have focused on innovative approaches of developing curriculum along agricultural value chains with the Competency-Based Training concept (CBT) delivered in formal, non-formal and informal systems. This is done through a systems approach of integrating ATVET in the national policies and strategies, mainstreaming Agriculture in the National TVET systems, building the capacity of TVET Colleges to design and implement Competence-Based Curriculum along agriculture value chains and linking trainers and trainees to the private sector through industrial placement, attachments and other practical approaches to impart hands-on training to the trainees.  The emphasis of training delivery has been on Agripreneurship.
